Introduction

As the capital of Serbia, the City of Belgrade occupies a central place in the economic, political and social fabric of the country. One of the constraints to its growth is the increasing level of traffic congestion in the centre of Belgrade. The two existing main road bridges are the “Most Gazela”, a single span motorway bridge, and “Brankov Most”, a 450m bridge connecting the centre of Belgrade to the densely populated residential suburb of Novi Beograd. Most Gazela is the main traffic artery into Belgrade and carries both local traffic and long distance transit traffic from the north and the west on the E75 and E70 motorways. Brankov Most carries mostly local traffic, but also some diverted long distance traffic travelling to the centre of Belgrade.

In order to reduce congestion and increase capacity on the network, it is proposed to construct a third major road bridge and approach roads across the Sava River, southwest of the existing Most Gazela.

Economic studies have shown that the existing network would face traffic collapse by 2021 hence the construction of the Sava bridge as the 1st stage of the ICSRR is anticipated to provide increased network capacity and generate traffic advantages such as:
  • Relief of traffic over Gazela bridge by 28-30%;
  • Relief of traffic on the Boulevard Vojvode Mišića by approximately 15%;
  • Significant travel time savings for passengers;
  • The expected overall economic benefits are anticipated to exceed the investment costs by a substantial margin.
